If you’ve ever dreamed of having a gorgeous saltwater aquarium at home but don’t want to manage the ongoing care, Sim Aquarium is a perfect alternative. It offers a virtual underwater world complete with coral reefs, gently swaying sea plants, and dozens of vibrant fish to choose from.
What really caught my eye was the lifelike way the fish move, without the stiff, two-dimensional “cardboard cutout” look you often see in similar programs. You can select a broad range of species: from powder blue tangs and four-eye butterfly to Moorish idols, chevron tangs, angelfish, and even great white sharks.
There’s also an option to pick from a variety of coral reef backgrounds, along with anemone or jellyfish scenes, and customize settings like water level, color saturation, and both the number and speed of bubbles. The only downside is that the free version includes just a couple of fish species, while most are available only in the paid upgrade.
In short, if you’re looking for a soothing aquatic getaway right on your computer, Sim Aquarium is the screen saver to beat.
